Officer Talon (National Poetry Month Poem-A-Day) Day 1
Officer Talon
written by Bruce A. Pandolfo

In Hillsboro County, NC worked Officer
Talon,
Detective, retiree, entirely inhuman in
his talent,
Cunning listener, it's unnerving, his
sensitive ears
something disconcerting as if he senses
your fears
Talon's got a scar that mars his nose from
a scuffle,
The inVader stepped in the ring, didn't
accept him as king, they tussled,
When two folks are too alike, there's
often bound to be trouble
see he's an animal once he's unleashed,
but throw him a bone,
Best friend to his partner Scott,
neither could go it alone,
Rough day? he's got his Dutch lady once
he's gonna go home,
They'll discuss the day chowing down
over their bowls,
He's a tacit Alpha officer of German
descent,
He doesn't see color, always does his
personal best,
Never fell off the wagon, makes sure
he's in check,
Difficult to understand him, prefers
speaking Czech,
Different set of customs, sent through
customs, see he's foreign,
He won't hesitate a second late, a perp
is in the forest?
Doggedly aggressive chases, spurred
with purpose, he'd run far in,
hits ground running twice as often as
anyone on the Force did,
track record, passed the average
person, got just the nose for it,
Word is he tracked a fleeing thief and
made the guy forfeit!
He and Scott the two of em got Him too!
Stands pridefully tall, and enthused,
though more often than not
Talon's surely the shortest cop in the
room,
Retired after 8 years,
though not long in the tooth,
(well, in a manner of speaking)
see, he took a tough fall through a
roof,
went to an attic one evening,
after a suspect, to collar the brute,
Took a risk that almost took him,
but that's what officers do
Had to take a limping step down,
when he went from a good four legs to
three,
Clearly his skills show he ain't quite
human,
Lives with Scott, his best pal, head
down
and now Vader carries the torch and
legacy
of Officer Talon, of Hillsboro County's
K-9 unit
