2019 Book List and Recommendations

Welcome to the year 2020! I don't think I'll ever get used to how futuristic that sounds!  Much to my consternation I realized while typing up this annual book list, that I haven't made an entry here on blogger since last January.  When I consider that, and my intentions for the various writing series that I intended on and my list of blog topics and ideas... it seems to me that the year flew by, although of course it did not.  It never does, we just perceive the time differently in relation to what we've got going on externally and internally. As of the day I'm writing this, I have now finished my first year back at school, at Stony Brook University, where I'm working toward my Bachelors in Journalism.  You'll note that I've read a lot of non-fiction (or a lot more than usual for me) and much of it is of a more sober, academic nature.  I hadn't a lot of time to read as I was so entrenched in academia and so many of these books were experienced a...

2018 Book List and Recommendations

Happy New Year,  Welcome to 2019 as well as a humble welcoming back to the annual retrospective of reading material I've enjoyed this year! As you'll come to see, 2018 was certainly the most comic book and graphic novel dominated year yet. I think this is also because I (to my shame) fell into the trap of watching a lot of Netflix. My housemate got a big television last fall in my house and it becomes this media centerpiece with such distracting gravity. Admittedly I don't have the willpower to resist this electronic tide-pool always,  I still read a little every day and still stubbornly prefer to read physical books.  It just feels better to me. Regardless, there was almost nothing that I read this year that I didn't love or wouldn't recommend (unless you were adverse to certain gore-laden horror titles like the brutal “Crossed” series, which is not for the faint of heart, to put it lightly.) I ended up returning one book that was gifted to me last Chri...

Bookworm recap 2017 booklist (with links and recommendations)

Hello Bookworms!     As we approach a new year, which comes with a cliche degree of incredulity, I figured I'd share the  list up of books I read in the past year (with as many links as I could muster to relevant things either purchase-links or information/website links.)   I don't think it affects you remotely, except perhaps to see where my head may have gone as far as motivation to read one title to another if there were any discernible through-lines, but this list is also in chronological order of reading them (save for random comic volumes) This year I actually obtained three new bookshelves, one of which I made from two old dresser drawers, so my crazy personal library is a little more tidy!   To my retrospective surprise, A great majority of these are both graphic novels AND specifically ones by Alan Moore .  I've really fallen in love with the graphic novel form. Also, in any endeavor he is tackling, he seems to be the greatest creator i...

Flowery Language Growing Through Cracks In Concrete Rules

Hey there AllOne family, Here is an essay blurb of sorts containing just a few thoughts on writing and expression.  This originated as a Facebook post that I put up as a discussion prompt after I scrolled past an advice column on editing....     Now, I understand the intent and concept of these ideas and that these following "rules" I'm about to reference are circumstantial.  Also, in creative expression it is important to remember that no rules really need to be heeded in artistic pursuits.  I'm always wary or a little conflicted when I read and recall advice like:  "don't use flowery language"  "don't use a ten dollar word where a dollar word will do"  "only use words that people understand"  and, the troublesome quote that I read in the article that prompted this: "if your readers need to grab a dictionary your writing needs improvement". You get the picture.       As I inferred, I understand that pret...

"The Editor" (National Poetry Month poem-a-day) Day 30

“ The Editor” Criminal episode49 written by Bruce A. Pandolfo 4/30/2017 In Maryland, Robin Woods was no Robin Hood robbing goods prolifically from warehouses or whatever whereabouts, but how else are you to make a living with no catered education, given the ruler at school your future is dimming a decade later, breaking and entering villain thieving phones and computer equipment.. stole a car, and 20k worth of gear, he's 26 tops, next night he's playing pool in comes 6 cops, a friend turned rat went behind his turned back, Robin doesn't blame the guy, its every man for himself, which often means its every man v.s. Everyone else. Non-violent felony, but had prior convictions too, given 16 years at Maryland Correctional Institute, Absolutely overkill, perhaps Draconian, certainly the worst place they'd ever thrown him in. Guards beat the inmates with nearly no provoking, so the next night, revenge was reaped in a riot...

6/12 Feeling at Home in Albany, Day 2

Image
Hello all, from All, from Albany!  I had the pleasure of meeting a wealth of new people and exploring the charming, if overcast, city of Albany which I recommend you do someday as well!  Found a wonderful venue that made me feel at home!  Lets see where life takes us... A Literary morning ritual, and new song!      I woke up and I read for a while before anyone else was awake. Writing and reading, especially in the morning, is hugely valuable to me. The ideas are fresh in my head if I'm writing and while my brain may be slow to function if I've gotten little sleep, it's also recently gathered some typically interesting things in a dream state.  I have a pretty strict ritual of reading in the morning, it wakes me up and gets my brain churning and chewing on ideas!  Danielle and her roommate Jeany woke up at some point and Danielle offered me her green tea generously. Feeling inspired, I sat by the window to look out on t...
