2020 Book List and Recommendations

Image
2021 has arrived!  Somehow, we survived 2020.  I suspect in large part via escapism, at least for me, was responsible for being delivered sanely through this year of chaos.   2020 was another year where I only posted twice on a blog I keep telling myself I'll make regular weekly posts on.   Where'd ya get em? About half a dozen books I read were ones that were assigned for classes ("Art Work", "Highbrow Lowbrow" "The Essentials Of Journalism" "The Home Place", "To Love The Wind and The Rain" to name a few).  I've decided to actually read through the entire books that are assigned in my classes, to seriously ensconce myself in the information and mentality of the Journalism degree I'm working towards at Stony Brook University.  A few books ( Hate Inc. and The Missing Year Of Juan Salvatierra and "The Three Paradoxes" ) were sent to me as surprised by my pen pal.  His music, book and movie recommendations are a...

"Inkwell-being" with Jesse Ramos (2018 collaborations overview 1/5)

Hey AllOne Family,      As we continue into early 2019 I thought it might be another fun retrospective weekly series to highlight some of the music I shared a role in throughout 2018. This year and 2015 were the only two years since 2010 that I didn't release some sort of full EP or LP project since I started sharing music publicly in 2010. However, Two-thousand and Collaborateen this was appropriately a relatively fecund year for quality collaborations and as a bonus, nearly all of them were unprecedented collaborations with artist friends as well!      Here is the start of an overview of a few of the songs that made it to the public ear (some that I wrote and recorded are still in behind-the-curtain stages). I felt it may be interesting to know the origins of relationship that spawned them and perhaps to know a brief comment on my intent and experience writing them.      I genuinely enjoy writing guest verses and answering t...

Sorry, I'm Working! (Prioritizing art and combating distractions)

Happy New Year and welcome to 2018 my fellow AllOnederers. As the symbolic significance of year's transitions entice us into hopeful changes of habit and pursuits of our ideals, this post I've been thinking about seems prime time to share. One of the things I value more than anything is my writing and musical creation craft.  However, our priorities are really expressed through how we spend our time.  As Kristoff Krane expresses with beautiful brevity on his new 2017 release, "Kairos part 1 ": "There's nothing more true than "You Are What You Do" " I often find myself having a difficulty carving out time to simply sit down and work on a recording project or a writing endeavor.  A mix of my own ADHD and codependency (Note: Self-observed and described) implores me to say "YES" to every plan and event offer or request that a friend or family member asks of me.  The trouble is, often I'm thinking in the back of my head ...

Flowery Language Growing Through Cracks In Concrete Rules

Hey there AllOne family, Here is an essay blurb of sorts containing just a few thoughts on writing and expression.  This originated as a Facebook post that I put up as a discussion prompt after I scrolled past an advice column on editing....     Now, I understand the intent and concept of these ideas and that these following "rules" I'm about to reference are circumstantial.  Also, in creative expression it is important to remember that no rules really need to be heeded in artistic pursuits.  I'm always wary or a little conflicted when I read and recall advice like:  "don't use flowery language"  "don't use a ten dollar word where a dollar word will do"  "only use words that people understand"  and, the troublesome quote that I read in the article that prompted this: "if your readers need to grab a dictionary your writing needs improvement". You get the picture.       As I inferred, I understand that pret...

"Pen & Paper" (National Poetry Month poem-a-day) Day 23

“ Pen and Paper” Criminal Episode 35 Written by Bruce A. Pandolfo 4/23/2017 Andy Austin was a regular in court for over four decades. She harassed a judge until she could get in there. Hardly left since. She's routinely looked mobsters and murderers right in the eye unflinching. She's traded smiles casually with John Wayne Gayce. Unafraid. She once drew on a woman and made her look real bad simply because the lady wouldn't give an inch for Andy to sit. Like most people,  Andy doesn't enjoy being present  for murder trials  (because they're boring.) Not enough passion, she says. She's framed dozens of killers, cleptos, and convicts. Her walls are adorned with pictures of folks who would make you shudder. Bit of a sketchy character really. But then...that's her job, Chicago Courtroom sketch artist.

"American Dream" (National Poetry Month poem-a-day) Day 19

“ American Dream” Criminal episode33 written by Bruce A. Pandolfo 4/19/2017 Even in his teen years Clay felt thieving could be fun. Bonnie//Clyde, John Dillinger, perhaps he could be one, Mentioned to friends and family he's sure it could be done, Mom became a victim of her would-be vigilante son, No Robin Hood just a hooded robber, Clay researched hard in a search bar to avoid gumshoes like cobblers and an agenda to give parents agita A well paid turbine mechanic, uncanny that he'd catch this bug to be a pest and hopefully not candidly caught on camera. When he stole from Mom she noticed him, but Moms know their sons and scolded him, no mask, no gun, no showboating, Non-violent, he'd take notes with him, walked in nonchalant wrote on envelopes he'd give in hopes to keep tellers at ease “ only hundreds and fifties please” Walking out exhilarated, The American Dream for the adrenaline fiend! Made a couple grand a...

"Break The Internet" (National Poetry Month poem-a-day) Day 13

“ Break The Internet” Criminal Episode 12 written by Bruce A. Pandolfo 4/13/2017 Give him thirty minutes and he'll know your whole story. He'll need a computer, of course. It all started with those ubiquitous AOL CD's in the 90s. He just wanted free internet. Figured that out pretty quickly, Dastardly digital cunning. Started downloading free music and movies. Couldn't wait in line online. So he did what anyone would do... you know, got in touch with the hackers, hacked away at their prejudices then hacked away for their tests. Ended up befriending this troupe of Russian rascals while hacking into University servers, Slept through school classes as he stayed up learning, sure not to alert or lure anyone to his private piracy. Now we're talking year 2000, He goes by MafiaBoy. It's comforting to know the professional pirates of the pixel planes aren't exempt from embarrassing internet handles. ...

"Mother's Little Helper" (National Poetry Month Poem-A-Day) Day 11

“ Mother's Little Helper” Criminal Episode 19 Written by Bruce A. Pandolfo 4/11/2017 Aye, you see that lady over there runnin' things? Yeah yeah, the cute lil grandma lady. Listen, you ain't gonna get one over on her, that's Ol' Sandy Alger. That badass broad's been 'round the block. She can't be shocked. I know, I know. She's 71. But that's what I'm sayin' She's ran every version of the games you're playin' long before you or your parent's were born. She's been clean longer than you and me been livin' and before that she was a junkie just as long. I know, I know. Word is her bedridden mom had nervous breakdowns so bad she needed two medicine cabinets! Imagine that jackpot? Nah don't think about it. Don't. But shit that's where it all started, Sandy's Mom preemptively prescribed some of those captivating capsules...Just a teensy bit to her te...

"Don't Let Me See You In The Whirl" (national poetry month poem-a-day) Day 9

“ Don't Let Me See You In The Whirl” Criminal Episode 56 written by Bruce A. Pandolfo 4/9/2017 “There is power in naming and power in shaming!” The Evening Whirl's weekly warning headline historically heralded!! The print pressed proudly and pugnaciously to punish the pungent by the jumpin' journalist of justice (Saint Louis' scribblin' Sanders) since he's 8 he's assisted sprawling out the scrolls, now he's 68 lays out photos to lay out felons, rapists and robbers who romp while applauding the courageous cops that drop, stop and stomp our neighborhoods' nasty ne'er-do-wells and dirty dastardly derelicts!! "Call Your Mom" (National Poetry Month poem-a-day) Day 8

“Call Your Mom” Criminal Episode 4 written by Bruce A. Pandolfo 4/8/2017 Among the idle chatter the officers had to stifle laughter despite the graphic aftermath at the crime scene when Casey said “I'll try to reach my Mom” at 3 O'clock, she's on the homicide team. Alright see, this isn't your ordinary morbid fairy tale a story carrying a portrait pairing well with an altered rearing skill absorbing love in a horrid scary world where the corpses can be held among hair-raising awful hellishness then when the day is done with just act normal, head home hug infants cuddle and kiss your husband tiptoeing a befuddling balance of the love of your bloodline and comfortably shrugging off puddling lines of blood that your day is covered in sometimes. Etched in a family tree, name signed in mortal coil cursive twisting like a double helix, genes twist tales from toiling Vernons Bill and Linda spend a lifetime near li...

Notes from the studio: On "Killing Your Darlings"

Image
Hey AllOne Family,      I hope this finds you well... I don't know if "Notes From The Studio" will be a recurring series but I wanted to do a little more talking about the craft and details/decisions behind what I do because I do put a lot of time and effort and mental energy into my creative process and I do love "talking shop" so much that I had this experience and I thought to write about it and invite you into this little window of my world and perhaps you could get something out of it, either as a creator yourself or just perhaps a nugget of information to satisfy any generous curiosity you might have. A few weeks ago, I tracked a new verse for a guest spot on a song from DRENT and Kleen Kut's next "Illiterate Wordsmiths" project "Edgar Allens Ave" .  The song is about bullying, suicide and loss and each rapper on the song plays a different character and role in the drama.  The incredible Ceschi of Fake Four Inc. is also...
